There is a story in the Bible about Elijah the prophet. He experienced many successes in his ministry, but he also knew seasons of discouragement and fear. In one such season, he fled for his life and found himself hiding in a cave. Alone and isolated in the darkness, he heard God speak to him. God called him to the entrance of the cave and asked a simple but profound question: “Elijah, what are you doing here?”
That is an important question, especially for all of us as people of faith. You could substitute your own name for Elijah’s. Philip, what are you doing here? What would your answer be?
As we think about our lives and the journeys we are on, we all come to pivotal moments when we must ask ourselves that same question. What am I doing here? How do I respond to God’s question about the direction of my life? Where am I going? Where am I headed? More importantly, what am I doing here in this moment?
Life is full of uncertainties and unknowns. At times, we find ourselves overwhelmed by the complexities of living in a world that does not provide easy answers. We become fearful of what we cannot see and anxious about what we cannot control. Like Elijah, we may even find ourselves retreating into our own caves of worry, disappointment, exhaustion, or confusion.
In those moments, we need to stop and listen. We need to become still enough to hear the voice of God speaking through the quietness of our hearts. The Holy Spirit continues to ask us the same question: What are you doing here?
Who do we anchor our lives to in those moments? Where do we find our strength, our guidance, and our direction? To whom do we look for answers? What we anchor ourselves to will determine how we respond to God’s question and where we go from there.
Elijah eventually heard God’s voice—not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire, but in a gentle whisper. That still, small voice guided him out of the cave and into a future grounded in God’s purpose, God’s faithfulness, and God’s steadfast presence.
The same can be true for us. God still speaks. God still guides. God still calls us forward. But it begins when we stop long enough to listen and honestly consider the question God places before us.
What are you doing here?
May we pause today, listen for God’s voice, and allow Him to guide us as our journey of faith continues.
